Fourteen oblates from Missouri, Kansas and Iowa gathered at the Clyde, Missouri, monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration for a Lenten weekend retreat March 20-22.

“Giving Up and Handing Over” began with a dramatic reading by Prioress General Sister Dawn Annette Mills, OSB. Oblate Director Sister Sarah Schwartzberg, OSB led the presentations, which focused on the theme of renunciation found in the “Conferences” by John Cassian and in the Rule of St. Benedict. The group also spent time comparing the story of the sacrifice of Isaac with that of Jephthah’s daughter as related in the biblical books of Genesis and Judges.

Participants spent time in prayer and reflection and joined the Benedictine Sisters for meals and the traditional Feast of St. Benedict on Saturday, March 21.

Linda Cauble and Andrea Kennedy were received as oblate candidates during Day Hour in the Adoration Chapel and were warmly welcomed by the community.

Benedictine oblates are men and women, married or single, who follow a variety of  faiths and choose to become formally affiliated with a monastery. They study and incorporate many Benedictine monastic practices into their own daily lives. For more information, please contact Sister Sarah at (660) 944-2221 or sarah@bspa.us.
