The mosaic of Christ above the altar covers almost the entire space of the apse to the ceiling. It measures 25 feet high and 24 feet wide and was designed by Brother Max Schmalzl, C.S.S.R. of Gars, Bavaria, in Germany. The mosaic depicts Christ as the Eternal High Priest standing on a globe, the figure of the world. Symbolic figures of the four Evangelists appear at the head and feet of Christ. They are represented by the human head, eagle, lion and ox. Kneeling at Christ’s feet are the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph. Below them are St. Gertrude and St. Margaret Mary. Angels abound in an arc around Christ.
