The Benedictine Sisters have launched a redesign of their congregational website, offering improved user experiences and additional ways for friends to connect with their monastic community.
Nearly a year in the making, the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration have completed a major project: the full redesign of their congregational website.
The previous version, last updated 13 years ago, had outlived its usefulness – both in terms of functionality and compatibility with today’s mobile technology. Sister Ruth Elaine Starman, OSB, who heads the website committee, recognized the need for change.
“I suggested to our leadership last fall that we look into a redesign to address those issues,” she said. “It’s important that we offer a website that is easy to navigate and reflects our life of prayer and Benedictine values.”
The first step was to gather references for professional website designers and review other websites for inspiration. The Benedictine Sisters ultimately selected KC Web Specialists in Kansas City to bring their vision to life.
“They were a great team to work with,” Sister Ruth Elaine said. “They understood our desire for a brighter, fresher look and helped us create a site we can now easily update ourselves.”
The redesign was a collaborative effort. Sister Maria Victoria Cutaia, OSB, and Kelley Baldwin, director of communications, assisted with the design process.
“Any time you undergo a web redesign, there are a million checklists involved, and the project can seem Herculean in scope,” Baldwin said. “Bringing in professionals created a systematic, day-by-day approach that made the process much easier.”

The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration have launched a redesigned website, which includes new and improved features for mobile users. Desktop and mobile versions allow for easier navigation from the landing page (left photo), an expanded section of current and past issues of the congregational magazine, “Spirit&Life,” (center photo), and a new section that chronicles the lives and histories of deceased Sisters (right photo).
Among the new features is an “In Memory” section, which shares obituaries of deceased members of the congregation. Archivist Sister Colleen Maura McGrane, OSB, who often receives requests from family members and researchers, helped make this information accessible online.
The Sisters also enhanced the functionality of online prayer requests and donation portals. Sister Nancy Rose Gucwa, OSB, director of development, assisted with those improvements.
“Our new site is easier to use, and the sections where people can request a Mass or enroll a loved one in our Association of Perpetual Adoration are a blessing,” she said. “We’re thrilled that it’s now easier for people to reach out to us in prayer or stay connected with our community.”
With these updates, the website is now more than just a source of information – it’s a place of connection.
“Engagement is an important role of any website,” Baldwin said. “We want people to learn about the beauty of the Benedictine Sisters’ monastery, to come visit and to connect with us online through prayer requests, giving opportunities and shopping for our handmade products.”
For Sister Ruth Elaine, the process was deeply rewarding.
“It was fun to help piece things together over a few months and then see the finished product,” she said. “Hopefully visitors will get a good sense of what our community is about and be inspired to visit us.”
