Health of their soul

Health of their soul - (14-06-2012)

Photo: The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration kicked off the summer with a weeklong Monastic Experience in Tucson, Ariz., for those discerning a call to religious life.

This year's Summer Monastic Experience in Tucson, Ariz., was an event full of community life, religious vocations, prayer and a little something extra, according to Vocation Director Sister Ruth Elaine Starman, OSB.

The nine women, ranging in age from 16 to 40, also enjoyed a "spiritual vitamin" each day.

"They were given a daily scripture quote," Sister Ruth Elaine explained. "Its goal was to help the health of their soul, a little gift to guide them through their day."

Participants spent their time in prayer, learning about skills that are vital to community life, the practice of lectio divina and adoration, and in-depth thoughts and reflections on the discernment of religious life.

It wasn't all work. Participants enjoyed playing games, a Memorial Day picnic and the joys of living in a multigenerational household.

The annual event invites women who are feeling a call to religious life to live with - on a temporary basis - with women religious to learn more about the day-to-day life of a monk and to discover if their calling is a contemplative one.

The Benedictine Sisters will host another Summer Monastic Experience from June 30 to July 7 at their monastery in Clyde, Mo. For more information, please visit the vocations page by clicking here.
