(TUCSON, Ariz.) - The day was called “Making a Difference,” and about 30 young adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did just that when they visited the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Tucson on Saturday, Oct. 27.

LDS church members, representatives of Tucson University’s 5th Ward, spent the day clearing a large area of the monastery’s grounds to make lawn care maintenance easier for the Benedictine Sisters.

The day of work was the result when Knight of Columbus Kelly Bequette of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish remarked to a Mormon friend about the Sisters’ needs and how he and fellow Knights have extended their help in a variety of ways throughout the years.

“Mr. Bequette told his friend how much the Knights of Columbus have done to help our Sisters,” Tucson Prioress Sister Ramona Varela, OSB said. “It planted a seed that eventually grew into his friend offering the opportunity for the Mormon young adults to volunteer their time with us too.”

The students were accompanied by LDS Bishop Richard Boyle, and the day also included presentations by Sister Mary Jane Romero, OSB and Sister Kathleen Gorman, OSB who shared insights into the life of a Benedictine monk.

“What a wonderful opportunity to make new friends with young people who offer so much to the world around them,” Sister Ramona said. “It was truly an inspirational day. They have earned our eternal gratitude with their spirit of thoughtfulness.”
