Those who attend the annual Advent and Christmas services at Westminster Abbey in London this year will be treated to a little slice of Americana.
The famous abbey’s official program features a photo of the Birth of Christ mosaic from the Adoration Chapel of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde.
Westminster Abbey officials contacted the Benedictine Sisters earlier this year after seeing the photo on a greeting card and asked permission to feature it in their holiday promotional materials.
The original mosaic was handcrafted by the Tyrolese Art Glass Company of Innsbruck, Austria, in the early 1900s when the Adoration Chapel was built. It is one of eight large mosaics that depict important scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To view photos of the Adoration Chapel's mosaics, stained glass, statues and woodwork, an online tour is available here. |
