The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration conducted their annual Founders Day celebration with a special twist this year.
Con-celebrants of the day’s mass on Sept. 5, 2017, were Conception Abbey’s Abbot Benedict Neenan, OSB (right) and Abbot Christian Meyer, OSB of Engelberg Abbey in Switzerland.
There is a very special connection among the communities. Engelberg Abbey founded Conception Abbey in America in 1873. When the monks arrived in Northwest Missouri, they asked the Swiss sisters at Maria Rickenbach convent, who they had served as spiritual advisers, to begin a community nearby. Maria Rickenbach soon sent five sisters, who founded the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, Missouri, a year later in 1874. |
