Turning knowledge gleaned from the classroom into real-world working experience is one of the goals of Rockhurst University’s Capstone program, and the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration were recently beneficiaries of the innovative concept.

After learning about the program from Rockhurst University President Reverend Thomas B. Curran, Sister Ruth Elaine Starman, OSB traveled to the Kansas City campus earlier this year to present information to the Capstone students about the Benedictine Sisters’ altar bread department, which is the largest religious producer of altar breads in the United States.

“I also outlined the challenges we face with our business in the hopes they could use the information to create a marketing strategy for us in moving forward,” she said.

In April and after four months of work, the students presented their findings on marketing and branding the Sisters’ product.

Attending the presentation were BSPA Prioress General Sister Dawn Annette Mills, OSB, Altar Bread Department Production Manager Margaret Branner and Sister Ruth Elaine.

"I was very impressed with the work the students did in creating a marketing strategy for our altar bread department,” Sister Ruth Elaine said. “They are creative young people who have given us recommendations that we intend to follow up on."
