Sister Sarah visits Arizona Oblate groups

Sister Sarah visits Arizona Oblate groups - (01-11-2019)

For several days in October, Benedictine Sister of Perpetual Adoration Sarah Schwartzberg, OSB, congregational oblate director, visited the oblate groups in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona. Although the congregation’s monastery in Tucson is now closed, the oblate groups continue to meet regularly in both cities and remain vital under the direction of their deans.

Sister Sarah attended the monthly oblate meeting in Tucson, where she gave a presentation on Obeying God’s Will. She also met with the Tucson deans, who treated her to a delicious meal at a local restaurant. In Phoenix, she participated in the monthly meeting of the West Valley group and presided at the final oblation of Mary Gorres. Later that day, oblate Mary Gibson prepared a luncheon for several members of the Central Phoenix and East Valley groups.

While in Tucson, Sister Sarah had the opportunity to tour the migrant shelter run by the Casa Alitas Program of Catholic Community Services. The shelter serves families who have left their home countries to escape violence and poverty. Once housed in the congregation’s former monastery and now located in another facility, the program provides a safe place for the migrants to rest, rehydrate, eat and care for their children. A change of clothes and hygiene items are also provided. Many local volunteers spend time and resources to help provide these vital services.
