Not even wild weather could dampen spirits during this spring’s Oblate retreat at the Benedictine Sisters’ monastery in Clyde, Missouri.
After a long separation due to the pandemic - and a hold on the traditional, in-person annual retreat - three Oblates from the Kansas City, Missouri, area joined Oblate Director Sister Kathleen Clare Lahl, OSB and members of the community for a weekend in May.
The retreat included a morning conference centered on the topic “God’s Call of Love,” followed by personal sharing, solitude and prayer. Oblates joined the Sisters for meals, fellowship, Eucharist and praying the Divine Office.
“They all welcomed the quiet time for rest and relaxation,” Sister Kathleen Clare said. “They were also grateful for solo time in the Adoration Chapel.”
During Vespers one evening, a tornado warning urged everyone to leave the chapel and seek shelter.
“We prayed Compline seated in the protective shelter of St. Gertrude’s hallway, accompanied by the sounds of howling wind, pouring rain and golf ball-sized hail pounding upon the roof,” Sister Kathleen Clare said. “As we completed our night prayers, the storm suddenly ceased, and the Oblates returned to the guest house amidst the peaceful light of the setting sun.”
